Bangladeshi man sentenced to life for rape, murder of Polish citizen

A Greek court has sentenced Bangladeshi youth Salahuddin, 33, to life imprisonment for the kidnapping, rape, and murder of Polish citizen Anastasia, 27.

After the verdict was announced on Friday, it has caused a widespread stir in the Greek media.

The rape and murder incident has been described as one of the most brutal crimes of recent decades.

Polish media TVN-24, quoting Greek media, reported that the formal hearing of the case began last Monday. The prosecutor brought charges of kidnapping, rape, and murder against Salahuddin. After the hearings and other arguments, the court sentenced him to life imprisonment on Friday.

The report stated that Anastasia worked at a hotel on Kos Island. One day in June 2023, after finishing her work hours, she went missing.

CCTV footage shows her shopping and chatting with some South Asian workers, including Salahuddin. She was later seen getting on his scooter to go to his house. This was the last time she was seen alive.

Anastasia was able to send a message to her boyfriend, but no further communication was made after that. Salahuddin was immediately identified as the prime suspect, as he was the last person seen with Anastasia.

According to local police, Anastasia's body was discovered by a member of a volunteer rescue team. It was found wrapped in a plastic bag under some branches, hidden near the popular tourist spot Salt Lake on Kos Island. Preliminary investigations revealed that Anastasia was strangled to death and was sexually assaulted before being murdered.
