All Bangladeshi crew members of “Banglar Samriddhi” stranded in Ukraine have been moved to a shelter house following Wednesday’s missile attack at Olivia port.
They were taken to a shelter house 2km away from the port on Thursday, Bangladesh Ambassador to Poland Sultana Laila confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.
She said the sailors had been instructed to enter a bunker if the situation deteriorated.
The body of the slain sailor, Md Hadisur Rahman, was also being preserved in a safe location under the supervision of the Bangladesh embassy in Poland, she added.
Sultana Laila said: "Hadisur’s body will be brought back to the country after considering the ongoing war situation.”
Meanwhile, Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen said Bangladesh Missions in neighbouring countries of Ukraine remain ready as they are exploring ways to find a convenient route for their safe exit from Ukraine.
The ship has already been abandoned considering the volatile situation there.
The foreign secretary said around 600 Bangladeshis are now in Poland and 100 of them are staying there under government arrangements.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md Shahriar Alam also said the government is trying to move stranded sailors of Bangladeshi ship to Warsaw, Poland from war-ravaged Ukraine.
The state minister said the government, in consultation with the Shipping Ministry, will bring back the 28 crew members and the body of the third engineer if the crew members can safely enter Poland.
On Wednesday, Hadisur, 47, a third engineer of “Banglar Samriddhi”, was killed in a rocket attack on a BSC vessel stranded at the Ukrainian port of Olvia, located in the Mykolaiv region on the left bank of the Dnipro-Bug estuary on the northern Black Sea coast.
All 29 crew on board were Bangladeshis.
“Banglar Samriddhi”, now caught in the fighting in Ukraine, reached Olvia on February 22 to load ball clay, according to the BSC.
