US President Joe Biden and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto have strongly condemned the ongoing violence against civilians in Myanmar.
In a joint statement issued after their meeting on Tuesday in Washington, DC, the leaders called for an immediate end to hostilities, according to Narinjara. They urged Myanmar's regime to create the conditions necessary for a national dialogue aimed at restoring the country to an inclusive democratic process.
The White House statement emphasized Biden’s support for the efforts of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) to address the crisis.
Both leaders reaffirmed their strong backing for Asean’s role in Myanmar, particularly the implementation of the “Asean Five-Point Consensus,” which seeks to bring peace and stability to the country.
The statement also recognized the work of Asean and United Nations special envoys in managing the crisis.
The two presidents called on all stakeholders in Myanmar to exercise restraint, protect civilians, and ensure a conducive environment for the delivery of humanitarian aid.
