93 killed by Myanmar junta airstrikes in Rakhine State in September

Airstrikes and artillery bombardment by Myanmar's military junta in Rakhine State between September 3 and September 26, resulted in 93 deaths and 138 injuries.

These figures, compiled by Narinjara in September, include civilians, prisoners of war (PoWs) held by the Arakan Army (AA), and inmates.

The attacks targeted several regions of Rakhine State, causing widespread devastation. On September 3, Sin Gaung village in Thandwe Township saw four injured, while a civilian was killed in Doe Tan Gyi village, Kyeintali Town. Additional airstrikes on September 7 wounded five in Thandwe Town’s Baw Di Kone ward.

A significant incident occurred on September 8 when airstrikes hit a temporary medical facility in Shin Ywar village, Pauktaw Township, which was treating PoWs and inmates. The strike caused 17 deaths and injured 10 others.

Another major attack on September 9 struck Maungdaw Town’s 2nd Border Guard Police Battalion (NaKhaKha-2) at 9:30pm, resulting in over 50 fatalities and more than 70 injuries.

In Yadanar Myaing village on September 15, artillery shells fired from an artillery camp hit a school in San Dar village, where internally displaced persons (IDPs) were sheltering. This attack left one woman dead and three others injured.

Several other attacks followed, including airstrikes in Thandwe Township’s Pauk Tu village on September 16, killing two and injuring seven. Strikes near the crossroads of Ponnagyun and Rathedaung towns on September 17 claimed one life and injured three.

The bombardment continued with deadly airstrikes in Taungup Township on September 19, killing a displaced woman in the workers' barracks at the Nay Pu Taung project. On September 22, three were killed and three others injured in Pauk Tu hamlet, Thandwe Township.

On September 24, airstrikes targeted Tan Lwe Ywar Ma Town in Taungup District, killing one young man and injuring another. A strike in Kan Htaung Gyi Town in Myebon Township on September 25 killed two people, including an 11-year-old girl, and left seven others injured.

The final attack of the month occurred on September 26, when airstrikes on Thandwe Town’s town hall and environmental conservation office killed 14 people and injured 25.

The death toll from junta attacks in September exceeds that of August, when at least 40 were killed and over 70 injured.

In early September, junta Chief Min Aung Hlaing vowed to reclaim lost territory through counteroffensives, Irrawaddy reports. Since his speech, the military's air force has carried out more than 40 airstrikes across Myanmar, resulting in the deaths of over 180 people, including approximately 15 children.
