Myanmar junta airstrikes kill 14 in Rakhine State

Myanmar junta carried out airstrikes on shelters in Thandwe, Rakhine State, on Thursday, killing at least 14 displaced civilians and wounding 25 others, according to the Arakan Army (AA).

AA spokesman Khaing Thukha said, four bombs were dropped by two fighter jets on the Environmental Protection Office and Thandwe Town Hall, where more than 200 civilians were sheltering, Irrawaddy reports.

“The regime knew exactly that people were sheltering there and they intentionally bombed civilians,” Thukha told The Irrawaddy. “Targeting civilians is a war crime that contravenes the Geneva Conventions.”

Children and the elderly were disproportionately affected, with AA medics treating the injured, he added.

Thandwe, seized by the AA in early September after months of fighting, has been repeatedly targeted by junta forces with naval ships and fighter jets.

Previous bombardments by naval and air strikes in June killed around 10 people and destroyed over 200 homes. The area’s mobile and internet services have been down since July.
