Bangladeshis shut businesses in South Africa after compatriot’s abduction

After a Bangladeshi was kidnapped in South Africa, many of his countrymen are shutting their businesses there.

This comes after Aktar Pradhan (37) was kidnapped on Friday at Portlands of Mitchells Plain in Cape Town.

Pradhan, who has been running his shop for nearly 10 years in Cape Town, became the eighth Bangladeshi to be kidnapped in the metro this year.

The kidnappers are allegedly demanding 20 million South African rands for his release, according to Eyewitness News.

In the wake of the incident, a Bangladesh community leader said more and more of his countrymen were now shutting down their businesses.

Now it seems that the spike in these business-related kidnappings is deterring Bangladeshis from staying in the country.

Meanwhile, a local journalist on Saturday shared a video apparently showing Pradhan getting kidnapped.

A friend of Pradhan said he did not want his identity to be revealed, as it could put him in danger. “So many businesses are for sale now because people want to go back home,” he said.

The Bangladeshi nationals said they fear Pradhan could be harmed, if they ask the police to intervene. They will therefore look to raise some money for his release.
