Which countries are celebrating Eid-ul-Fitr on Saturday?

Eight countries around the world are set to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr on Saturday.

The countries are - Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, Japan, Brunei, Australia and the Philippines.

The moon, marking the holy month of Shawwal, was not sighted on Thursday in any of these countries, prompting the announcement of Saturday as the day of the Eid celebration.

However, it is still unknown when Eid-ul-Fitr will be celebrated in Middle Eastern countries, including the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Saudi Arabia.

On Thursday evening, the UAE moon-sighting committee called on Muslims to look for the Shawwal moon. They have requested people to inform them if the moon is sighted.

Meanwhile, based on astronomical data, the Abu Dhabi-based International Astronomical Center (IAC) said in a statement: "It will be quite difficult to see the Shawwal moon with the naked eye and through telescopes in most of the Arab world, including Saudi Arabia, on Thursday. However, it might be possible to sight the moon in some countries of West Africa."
