Ashraf Ghani in UAE

Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani is in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the Gulf state's foreign ministry said on Wednesday.

The UAE's foreign ministry said the country had welcomed Ghani and his family on humanitarian grounds.

"The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation can confirm that the UAE has welcomed President Ashraf Ghani and his family into the country on humanitarian grounds," it wrote.

Ghani left Afghanistan over the weekend as Taliban forces advanced on the capital of Kabul, prompting much speculation about his whereabouts. In his first public comments on Sunday, he said he had left the country to avoid further bloodshed.

His whereabouts were unknown until Wednesday, with speculation that he had fled to Tajikistan, Uzbekistan or Oman.

Speaking from exile in the UAE, Ghani said on Wednesday that he had left Kabul to prevent bloodshed and denied reports he took large sums of money with him as he departed the presidential palace.
