The novel coronavirus can be killed by water within 72 hours, according to a study conducted by Russian scientists.
According to the report, the study done by the State Research Centre of Virology and Biotechnology VECTOR suggested that water at boiling temperature can destroy the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes Covid-19 completely and instantly, reports Anadolu Agency.
The research showed that 90% of virus particles die in room temperature water in 24 hours and 99.9% within 72 hours.
The findings from the research published on Thursday by the Russian Federal Service for Human Wellbeing indicated that the resilience of the coronavirus is directly dependent on the temperature of the water.
While coronavirus can live in water in certain conditions, the study claimed that the virus does not multiply in either sea or fresh water.
The study showed that the virus can remain active up to 48 hours on stainless steel, linoleum, glass, plastic, and ceramic surfaces.
However, the research suggested that most household disinfectants are effective against the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
The study found that ethyl and isopropyl alcohols of 30% concentration can kill up to a million particles of the virus in half a minute.
This contradicts the previous studies that showed a concentration of more than 60% was required to destroy the virus. The study found that disinfectants with chlorine can completely clear a surface of coronavirus within 30 seconds.
Meanwhile, Russia's health minister is preparing a mass vaccination campaign against the novel coronavirus for October, local news agencies reported on Saturday, after a vaccine completed clinical trials, reports Reuters.
Health Minister Mikhail Murashko said the Gamaleya Institute, a state research facility in Moscow, had completed clinical trials of the vaccine and paperwork is being prepared to register it, Interfax news agency reported. He said doctors and teachers would be the first to be vaccinated.
