Coronavirus: Accounts of infected Uber riders, drivers might be suspend

Uber, the US based rideshare company, has said that it is working with various public health organizations to decide whether or not to temporarily suspend the accounts of riders and drivers if they test positive for coronavirus (COVID-19).

They made the statement on Wednesday, reports Reuters.

Uber presented the company’s detailed policy on the COVID-19 outbreak for all drivers and riders on its website, summarizing the steps the company has taken to manage the crisis.

“We have a dedicated global team, guided by the advice of a consulting public health expert, working to respond in every market where we operate around the world,” Uber said.

In February, Uber suspended 240 accounts of users, suspected to have come in contact with someone possibly infected with the new coronavirus, in Mexico.

Uber said on Saturday it would offer compensation to drivers and delivery people diagnosed with the coronavirus or placed in quarantine for up to 14 days.

“We’ve already helped drivers in some affected areas, and we’re working to quickly implement this worldwide,” the company said.

Uber also said it was working on providing drivers with disinfectants to keep their cars clean.

About 4,500 people have died so far worldwide. As of Wednesday, there were more than 1,100 confirmed infections in the United States and 32 deaths, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University.
