A very old Bengali tradition is theatre, which can also be called "jatra pala" in Bangla. Out of all the places in Dhaka city -- this is what attracts people the most.
Shilpakala Academy often has theatre performances taking place. Different notable real life stories are highlighted. The youngsters get a real touch of Bengali history and culture through this. These old tales would have faded away like smoke, but the theatres keep them alive like fresh flowers.
Theatre can be of different types, like Sanskrit, modern, traditional, live etc. Traditional theatrical performances typically contain acting, singing, dancing, music, dialogue, narration, or recitation, but may also include puppetry or pantomime.
One common type of traditional theatre is folk theatre. Through theatre folk culture and traditions are taught to people. In the past, it was the only type of theatre people used to know. Folk songs, folk dramas, and the lifestyle of that period are highlighted through it.
Live theatre mainly focuses on present topics -- the things happening at this moment or the topics which are affecting people at present time. It can be a present crisis, disaster, or anything like that.
Sanskritik theatre highlights the Sanskriti of Bengal. Bangla is always well known for its Sanskriti. It showcases Bengalis’ ancient period Sanskriti, periods from ancient to present Sanskriti, modern Sanskriti etc. It highlights the time of Pre-Charyapada, Charyapada, Post-Charyapada, etc.

Theatre has also inspired people many-a-times. During British rule, theatres inspired freedom. They highlighted the actual state condition to the world through acting, singing, dancing etc. Such freedom of expression can be considered as a symbol of independence.
Theatre also highlights political activities, political conditions for spreading knowledge to people. It enlightens the political condition of a nation to the world. It is also a way of standing against injustice,oppression which has helped the common people several times. A daring example is our liberation war movement. At that time it motivated as well as gave instructions to people to fight against the opposition party. It is really a great means of support and awareness.
Whether it is as an audience member or a crew member, theatre helps have a positive effect on children’s lives through fun and entertaining activities. It provides an escape into fantasy while also teaching valuable lessons and history.
Theatre is also a means of nurturing creativity. Students can showcase their creative talents to the world. Many major actors, singers, and dancers come out through doing theatre first.
Theatre represents a nation by highlighting its culture, tradition, and current situation.
