Djokovic stunned in Paris Masters final

Danish teenager Holger Rune shocked six-time champion Novak Djokovic to clinch his first Masters title in Paris Sunday after coming from a set down to win 3-6, 6-3, 7-5.

Rune, 19, became the youngest winner of the Paris tournament since Boris Becker in 1986 after beating five top-10 players in as many days.

He is the fifth first-time Masters winner this season and will be the first Danish man to break into the top 10 Monday.

Djokovic earlier needed a third set tiebreak to squeeze past world No 5 Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (7/4) Saturday and reach the final.

An eighth successive win over the Greek extended the Serbian's overall winning streak to 13 matches, which ended with the Rune loss.

Djokovic failed to post a record-extending seventh Paris crown and 39th Masters triumph.

In spite of the defeat, Tsitsipas can still finish the year as world No 1 if he wins the ATP Finals following Carlos Alcaraz's decision to skip the Turin tournament because of the abdominal tear that forced him to retire from his quarter-finals against Rune.

Rune meanwhile, beat in-form Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-4, 6-2 to reach a first Masters final.

In his semi-final, Rune avenged his loss to Auger-Aliassime in last weekend's Basel final to book his place in a fourth successive final.

A quarter-finalist at this year's French Open, Rune collected his fourth straight victory over a top-10 player this week by ending Auger-Aliassime's 16-match winning run.

The Canadian was attempting to become the first man to win four tournaments in as many weeks since Ivan Lendl swept five over a five-week span in 1981.

Rune inflicted a first defeat on Auger-Aliassime since his first-round loss at the Astana Open a month ago.

Having arrived in Paris with just three wins at the Masters level, Rune began his run to the final by saving three match points to beat three-time Grand Slam champion Stanislas Wawrinka in the first round.

He then took down Hubert Hurkacz followed by Andrey Rublev before seeing off Alcaraz as the world No 1 retired with injury while trailing by a set last Friday.
