The Bangladesh open and women’s chess teams conceded defeats in their respective matches in the fifth round of the 41st World Chess Olympiad on Wednesday which is being held in Tromso, Norway.
Grandmasters Ziaur Rahman and Abdullah Al Rakib only managed to draw their matches while the other two lost as Bangladesh, seeded 55th, lost to 20th seeded Peru by 1-3 points in the open section.
Zia (Rating-2523) drew with GM Granda Zuniga Julio E (Rating-2663) and Rakib (Rating-2522) drew with GM Cordova Emilio (Rating-2629). GM Enamul Hossain Razib lost to GM Cori Jorge (Rating-2630) and International Master Minhazuddin Ahmed Sagar (Rating-2418) lost to GM Cruz Cristhian (Rating-2553).
The Bangladesh open team earned five match points and 10 game points following the conclusion of the fifth round.
Meanwhile in the women’s category, Bangladesh lost to Iceland by 2.5-1.5 points in their fifth round games. Sharmin Sultana Shirin (Rating-1984) won against Johannsdottir Johanna Bjorg (Rating-1862) and WIM Rani Hamid drew with Thorsteinsdottir Hallgerdur (Rating-1982). WIM Shamima Akter Liza (Rating-2147) lost to WGM Ptacnikova Lenka (Rating-2273) and WFM Zakia Sultana (Rating-1964) lost to Finnbogadottir Tinna Kristin (Rating-1915).
The Bangladesh women accumulated four match points and nine game points out of five matches.
