Sports Bangla’s Subrota clinches GM Zia Memorial 2025 Chess

FIDE Master Subrota Biswas of Sports Bangla clinched the title of the GM Zia Memorial 2025 which was held in memory of Grandmaster Ziaur Rahman.

FM Subrota won the crown after getting eight points in nine games.

Fellow FM Tahsin Tajwar Zia became runner-up and Indian International Master Kushagra Mohan finished third with 7.5 points each.

Their tie was broken by tie-breaking system.

Indian IM Shuvayan Kundu ended fourth, IM Manon Reja Neer became fifth and Anata Choudhury emerged sixth with 6.5 points.

FM Sakline Mostafa Sajid placed seventh while fellow FM Khandaker Aminul Islam became eighth with six points each.

Special awards were given to the best rated player Rashedul Hasan, the best junior Nepalese Candidate Master Silwal Purushottam and the best female Woman CM Warsia Khusbu.

Chess

The ninth and final round of games were held Friday.

In the ninth round, FM Subrota defeated IM Minhaz Uddin, FM Tahsin beat FM Sheikh Nasir Ahmed, IM Mohan defeated CM Purushottam, IM Neer beat Woman CM Khusbu, IM Kundu defeated Rishon Thapa, Anata beat Tashriq Saihan Shan, FM Aminul defeated Muhaimenul Islam, FM Sakline beat FM Sharif Hossain and Rashedul defeated FM Debraj Chatterjee.

After the matches, the prize distribution ceremony was held in the afternoon.

Syed Shujauddin Ahmed, president of Bangladesh Chess Federation, was present as the chief guest and distributed prizes among the winners.

Dr. Taibur Rahman, general secretary of the chess federation, Woman IM Rani Hamid, Grandmaster Zia's wife Tasmin Sultana and former chess player Golam Sabbir Ali gave speeches in the award ceremony.

The winners of the competition were awarded a cash prize of Tk5 lakhs.

Champion FM Subrota received Tk1.5 lakhs, runner-up FM Tahsin got Tk1 lakh while third placed IM Mohan pocketed Tk75,000.
