Bangladesh's celebrated endurance athlete, Mohammad Shamsuzzaman Arafat, has completed one of the world’s toughest ultra-marathons, the Snowman Race in Bhutan.
Known for its grueling conditions and elevation challenges, the Snowman Race spans over 178 kilometers through the rugged terrain of the Himalayas, reaching altitudes as high as 5,470 meters.
Arafat’s remarkable feat makes him a pioneering figure for Bangladeshi endurance athletes and sets an inspiring example for runners across the globe.
Arafat’s accomplishment is historic not only for Bangladesh but also within the global endurance community, as the Snowman Race is considered among the most challenging ultra-races in the world.
By finishing the race, Arafat joins an elite group of international athletes who have braved Bhutan’s daunting mountain paths, unpredictable weather, and extreme altitudes.
"Finishing the Snowman Race was a dream that required unyielding grit, resilience, and faith, but as a sea level person it’s quite hard to get me finish line fighting against altitude" said Arafat after the race.
"The journey through Bhutan’s Himalayas was as beautiful as it was demanding. I was struggling a lot in breathing and uneven surface. But I am incredibly grateful for the support of my friends, family, and fellow athletes, whose encouragement kept me going through every challenging mile."
Arafat was welcomed at the finish line by his fellow athletes and supporters with great honor, acknowledging both his extraordinary physical endurance and his dedication to representing his country on an international platform.
His finish at the Snowman Race follows his impressive third-place achievement at Ironman Malaysia earlier this month, where he overcame a bike malfunction to reach the podium.
This string of successes cements Arafat’s reputation as one of Bangladesh’s most resilient and accomplished endurance athletes.
The Snowman Race, conceived to raise awareness about the impacts of climate change on Bhutan's high-altitude communities, aligns deeply with Arafat’s own commitment to environmental causes.
Arafat expressed his hope that his participation would inspire greater action and awareness around climate resilience in Bangladesh and beyond.
Arafat’s journey through the Himalayas stands as a testament to human endurance, and his achievements continue to elevate Bangladesh’s presence in the global athletic arena.
His success is expected to ignite a new era of athletic ambition and environmental advocacy among Bangladeshi youth, who look up to Arafat as a true national hero.
