World Cup Bridge: Bangladesh beat India, continue brilliant run

Bangladesh continued their brilliant form in the 44th Bermuda Bowl, also known as Bridge World Cup, as they win two out of three matches including their match against India in the second day of the tournament at Wuhan, China on Monday.

Bangladesh beat strong Norway side in the first day and continued their impressive endeavour as they beat India in their very first match of the day.

AHM Kamruzzaman and Moshiur Rahman showed their outstanding skill once again in the close room as in the second board, Kamruzzaman’s eight of club lead set the opponents 4heart doubled contact by 1 and earned 11 IMPs as Asifur Rahman Chowdhury made 4h in the open room.

However, India clawed back in the game and after 13 boards the game was in the parity with 16-16 but the men in red and green earned two more IMPs in last three boards to clinch a creditable 18-16 (10.31-9.69 VP) victory.

Bangladesh got further boost in the second match as Shah Zia ul Haque appeared for the first time in the open room with Asif and Moshiur partnered Rashedul Ahsan, who has shown remarkable prowess over the last two days, in the close room.

But the new combination failed to keep the winning run in another hard fought game and an impressive Singapore side won the match by 36-29 IMPS(12.03-7.97 VP).

Bangladesh brought back Kamruzzaman and with him the win as they beat Argentina 36-29 IMPs (12.03-7.97VPs) in their final match of the day. He, along with his formidable partner Moshiur conceded 13 IMPS in the fourth board after getting down by two in a 3NT contact opposite a successful 4H bid but they recovered it brilliantly in the remaining boards. Kamruzzaman’s defense, when he led 9 of diamond in a 3NT contact in the 13th board, was one of the finest plays in the day and Bangladesh got 12 IMPs from that board. Meanwhile, Zia and Asifur in the open room were cool as cucumber to ensure another glorious feat.

With two days of good results Bangladesh are now in the 14th place with 60.71 VPs in the 24-team tournament. It’s worth mentioning that in the bridge, unlike other sports, win in a match does not award any point but the total VPs accumulated in the matches are gauge of deciding the team’s position in the points table.
