Lukman wins International Junior badminton tournament

Md Abdul Hamid Lukman clinched the men’s singles title in the Yonex-Sunrise Bangladesh International Junior badminton tournament after beating Syed Saker Mohammad Sibgat Ullah by 2-1 sets in the final held at the Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Indoor Stadium in the capital on Thursday.

Lukman, who won gold in the same event of the inaugural Bangladesh Youth Games, made a brilliant comeback from the 17-21 point defeat in the first set to level the margin with close 22-20 win in the following set before he strolled to a comfortable win in the last set by 21-15.

“I worked very hard to better my performance in the singles matches. All three matches were challenging for me but I’m happy to overcome all hurdles. I am proud to finish as champion in an international tournament.” said Lukman admitting that it would have been good for local shuttlers if better participants from India and Nepal came.

The in-form pair of Gourab Singha and Mangal Singha however won in the men’s double event beating Lukman and Hanif Mohammad 21-16, 21-17 in the final on the same day.

Local female shuttlers Rasma Akter and Urmi Akter bagged gold in the women’s doubles event after beating Rahima Jarin Ahmed and Kamelia Islam 21-9, 22-20 points in the final.

Indian shuttler Treesa Jolly won two gold medals in the women’s singles and mixed doubles events. Jolly outplayed Ruhi Raju of Malaysia 21-15, 21-11 in the women’s singles final. Jolly and Manav Raj Sumith defeated the Gourab-Urmi pair 21-14, 21-14 in the mixed doubles final.
