Suspended hockey trio awaiting fate

National hockey players Russel Mahmud Jimmy, Zahid Hossain and Imran Hasan Pintu might see their suspensions withdrawn by the Bangladesh Hockey Federation. Another suspended player, midfielder Quamruzzaman Rana, recently returned to national team duty after the decision to ban him was reconsidered.

At the end of last year, the BHF had suspended the quartet from the national side due to abject performances and poor discipline. Rana, who was suspended for two years, is the first player whose suspension was withdrawn on October 27. The BHF officials are mulling bringing them back as the national team have put in some below-par performances since last year.

“A working committee meeting is expected to be held in the first week of this month when the decision of the three banned players will be taken. If the working committee takes a positive decision then the executive committee will decide their final fate,” said acting BHF general secretary Tanvir Adil Khan yesterday.

The Bangladesh hockey team’s next assignment will be the second round of the Hockey World League in Singapore in two months’ time.

Zahid and Imran are already training to get their full fitness back while former national star striker Jimmy informed that he has no intentions of talking about hockey at the moment.
