Bangladesh youth hockey team slumped to their second defeat in the 2nd Summer Youth Olympic Games as they were beaten 5-2 by Australia at the Nanjing YOG Sports Park Hockey Field in Nanjing, China yesterday. Yesterday’s scoreline, however, gives a far respectable reading than the previous one when the youth hockey team was humiliated 9-1 by Spain.
The five-a-side hockey match was played in three periods and Australia youth team went 1-0 up in the opening period before Bangladesh pulled one back to take the score to 2-1 after the first two periods. Australia, one of the tournament’s favorites, however, rolled on comfortably in the last half when they managed to find the back of the net three more times to seal a comprehensive 5-2 victory.
Australian forward Warne Mackenzie netted four goals in the 11th, 18th, 30th and 31st minute of the game but was unlucky not to get the hat-trick as Rasmussen Alec scored the third one in the 21st minute for the Aussies. Md Deen Islam Emon and Md Naim Uddin scored one apiece in the 21st and 26th minute respectively for Bangladesh.
Bangladesh will play their third match against Canada today at the same venue before facing South Africa the next day in their last game. If Bangladesh wins against South Africa, there is a chance they will reach the quarterfinals as the South Africans are yet to win a game as well from pool A. A total of 10 teams split into two groups are playing in this 5-a-side hockey and top four teams from each group will progress to last eight.
