Upset in Victory Day Hockey as Air Force lose to Welfare Unity

In a pulsating match, Hockey Players Welfare Unity upset Bangladesh Air Force 4-3 in the Paragon Group Victory Day Hockey at Maulana Bhashani Stadium Tuesday.

Hockey Players Welfare Unity, formed with a number of national players like Pushkor Khisa Mimo, Hasan Jubaer Niloy, Prince Lal Shamonto and some exciting youngsters of the national youth team, arrived as a solid outfit against the Air Force side.

The Air Force team comprising seven national players tried hard to turn the tide in their favor.

Hockey Players Welfare Unity fielded national youth team members Amirul Islam, Shimul Islam and Mohammad Abdullah and the trio showed their worth.

Air Force took the lead in the 17th minute off a beautiful field goal from Rakibul Hasan Rocky.

Amirul, who was in top form in the Asian Junior Hockey, equalized from a penalty corner in the 33rd minute.

Niloy put Hockey Players Welfare Unity ahead in the 35th minute and Abdul Alim’s strike in the 42nd minute saw the team lead 3-1 at the start of the third quarter.

Arshad Hossain grabbed Air Force’s second in the 44th minute off an electric flick, making the score line 3-2.

However, Alim’s second of the match in the 57th minute sent Air force into despair.

In the 59th minute, Air Force’s Sohanur Rahman Sobuj struck the third but within seconds the whistle was blown to bring an end to the enthralling clash, sparking wild celebrations among the Hockey Players Welfare Unity players.
