Sheikh Kamal 2nd Youth Games underway with grand ceremony

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the final phase of the Sheikh Kamal 2nd Youth Games which got underway with a grand ceremony Sunday.

The formal inauguration of the competition was held at Army Stadium Sunday.

Monon Reza Neer, Nusrat Jahan Alo, and Omnia Binta Yusuf Lubaba caught the limelight on the opening day as they are the only gold medalists from the day.

Neer won two gold in boy's rapid and blitz event while Lubaba and Alo became champions in the girl's rapid and blitz chess event respectively. 

In girls' football, Dhaka and Rangpur confirmed the semi-finals.

Dhaka clinched a 3-0 victory over Khulna with Shipa (47 minutes), Eti (57 minutes) and Ananna (83 minutes) scoring for the capital city outfit.

Rangpur made it a cake-walk, thrashing Sylhet 13-0.

Rivana led the goal-spree with five goals and Kolpona played a perfect foil to her with four goals.

Shanti netted twice while Sapna and Morium scored one goal each.

The semi-final line up of boys' football was also decided.

Rangpur edged past Dhaka 2-1 at Paltan Outer Stadium thanks to scorers Rakib and Atikul, while Sylhet beat Mymensingh 5-2 on penalties after a goalless draw.

Khulna also beat Chittagong 5-4 on tiebreaker after the game was left undecided following a 1-1 draw.

Chess players Monon Reza Neer and Nusrat Jahan Alo caught the limelight, capturing the first two gold medals on the opening day 

Sagar and Ibrahim scored one each to steer Rajshahi to a 2-0 win over Barisal.

In women's hockey, Chittagong, Rajshahi, Dhaka and Khulna won their respective matches to reach the semi-finals.

Rajshahi beat Mymensingh 3-1 in penalty shootout after the game ended in a 1-1 draw.

The match between Khulna and Rangpur was also decided on tie-breaker with the former winning the game 5-4.

The thrilling game ended in a 4-4 draw.

Chittagong division crushed Barisal 8-0 with Niladri Barua Neel netting four times.

The match between Dhaka and Sylhet was also one-sided with the former sealing a comprehensive 8-1 victory to reach the last-four.

A total of six matches of men's and women's volleyball were held at Shaheed Nur Hossain National Volleyball Stadium.

Khulna, Rangpur and Dhaka won their respective games in men's volleyball while in women's section, Barisal, Rajshahi and Chittagong became winners.

The basketball event kicks off today with six teams from men's and women's section battling for the coveted award.

Group A of men's and women's section comprise Rajshahi, Chittagong and Rangpur while Dhaka, Khulna and Mymensingh make up Group B.

In handball, Dhaka division secured a 17-1 win over the port city and Rajshahi crushed Barisal 34-1 while Rangpur thrashed Mymensingh 28-2 in girls section.
