Hockey players boycott national camp

National hockey players decided to boycott the national hockey camp as the Bangladesh Hockey Federation postponed the national camp for Asia Cup citing 'accommodation problems' for the players yesterday. The federation said as the National Sports Council is yet to provide clearance to use the hostels and that they had no other option but to defer the camp. However the players reacted strongly over the decision and announced the boycott through the Players Welfare Association. National skipper Jahid Hossain said he is shocked by the development. “Why did the federation opt to postpone the camp, we were demanding a date of the transfer, that’s all. The general secretary could us to continue the camp and would have,” said Jahid. Earlier on Tuesday national hockey players threatened not to join the national camp demanding a date for the pre-season players’ transfer. The League Committee of Bangladesh Hockey Federation decided to hold the transfers a week after its executive committee election. But this decision did not go down well with the players who have been pleading for the transfers for some time. Meanwhile it was leant that the hockey federation is on the verge of signing Indian coach Ajay Kumar Bansal who guided Delhi Waveriders in the Hockey India league as the new coach of the national team. Ajay is regarded as a good tactician but his team finished runners-up in the Hockey India League behind Ranchi Rhinos, the team they beaten had thrice in the group stages. The Bangladesh Hockey Federation was recently boosted by the assistance of Janata Bank Limited who  extended their support for developing the standard of hockey in the countey. They agreed to provide a record Tk 9.44 million for the appointment of a foreign coach as the federation finally revealed the name of the coach. Failing to seal a deal with a European coach the BHF finally opted for a sub-continental touch.
