Bangladesh golfers dominated the opening day of the inaugural Dhaka Open with Shakhawat Hossain Sohel topping the round one chart after carding five-under-par 67 in the capital's Kurmitola Golf Course Wednesday.
The country's leading golfer Siddikur Rahman, who is eying his second Asian Development Tour title after 2011, also had a decent start, hitting four-under-par 68 to take second spot, followed closely by local golfer Mohammad Sayum, who finished the day at third with three-under-par 69.
Sohel, who was nominated from Bangladesh to take part in all Asian Tour events this season along with Siddikur, struck three birdies on the 11th, 16th and 17th holes before adding four more birdies in the front nine holes. He however, conceded two bogeys afterwards.
Siddikur, who played five birdies against a lone bogey, said, "We have some good players who have the ability to do better and I think they will offer great challenge like what Sohel did. I’m really happy to see my friend leading the first day and I wish he continues his form but as I’m here to win the title, I will also give my best."
The four-day event is a trio-sanctioned international tournament organised by Asian Development Tour, Professional Golf Tour of India and the Professional Golfers Association of Bangladesh.
