Bangladesh to face Australia in FIFA WC qualifiers

Bangladesh will face Australia in their bid to qualify for the 2018 World Cup after having been drawn in Group B of Asian qualification for the global focus in Russia.

Other Group B countries are Kyrgyzstan, Jordan and Tajikistan.

It was announced on Tuesday at a second phase draw ceremony in Kualampur of Malaysia.

Bangladesh is now 167 on the FIFA world rankings while the remaining three are Australia (63), Jordan (103), Tajikstan (143) and Kyrgzstan (153).

Just the group winner is guaranteed a place in the final round of qualification for the World Cup – and by default a spot in the 2019 Asian Cup finals too – with the four best runners-up from the eight groups also progressing.

Australia will kick off their campaign away in Kyrgyzstan on June 16 before playing their first home match in Perth against Bangladesh on September 3.

FIFA has not yet confirmed how many spots will be allocated for Asia, though it is expected to be 4.5, like Brazil 2014.
