India defeated Bangladesh 5-1 in a Group A match of the 3rd Saff Women’s Championship at Jinnah Stadium in Islamabad yesterday. Maldives defeated Afghanistan 1-0 in the other group match of the day.
The Bangladeshi women put up a gallant show in the first half which was goalless. Defending champions India, however, came back in the second half with all guns blazing and scored five goals. Uma Pati Devi broke the deadlock in the 46th minute before Mandarani Devi doubled the lead in the 48th minute. Bala Devi added the third in the 57th minute and also scored the fifth in the 86th minute. The fourth was netted by Indu Mati in the 76th minute. Bangladesh’s consolation goal was attained by forward Sabina Khatun six minutes before the final whistle.
Bangladesh thumped Afghanistan 6-1 in their first match last Thursday. They will conclude their group campaign against Maldives tomorrow.
