Another football title in Dhaka Tribune’s trophy cabinet

Dhaka Tribune was declared joint champions alongside My TV in the Kool-BSJA Media Cup Football after the stipulated time of the entertaining final ended in a 1-1 draw at the BFF artificial turf yesterday. Later the organising committee declared both the teams as the joint champions.

Humayun of My TV put his team ahead in the fourth minute after Tribune defender Shamsur Rahman Shakib made a blunder and lost the ball. However, Tribune regrouped in the second-half as Tareq Miru equalised with a fierce left-footed drive three minutes after resumption.

However, after the completion of the stipulated time My TV refused to go to tiebreakers as Tribune opted to send their captain Reazur Rahman Rohan under the goal bar as a substitute goalkeeper. Although the referee ruled that any playing member on the field during the final whistle is allowed to take the goalkeeping position, the My TV contingent were adamant with their views.

Later when BSJA officials and other people present there failed to convince them, Hasanullah Khan Rana, renowned senior journalist and sports editor of Jamuna TV and a resident of Arambagh, stepped up in an attempt to calm the situation and restart the game. However, in a heated moment there was an altercation where Rana was assaulted. A bearded companion who stepped ahead to assist Rana, was also beaten up by the My TV officials and players.

Soon, after seeing Rana and the other man assaulted, the residents of Arambagh attacked the My TV players and officials and injured a number of them. Police also arrived at the venue and as the situation cooled down, the organising committee declared the teams as the joint champions as both the team captains joined to receive the trophy.

Al-Amin of My TV was adjudged the man of the final while Reazur Rahman Rohan of Dhaka Tribune was named the best player of the tournament.

National sports award winning football coach and former national player Golam Sarwar Tipu was the chief guest during the prize distribution ceremony. Malik Mohammed Saeed, the head of marketing of sponsors Square Toiletries was the special guest on the occasion. BSJA president Sayeeduzzaman, general secretary Saidur Rahman and tournament committee convener Arifur Rahman were also present among others.

In the last one-and-a-half years this is the third football title that Dhaka Tribune has lifted. Dhaka Tribune won the Ascent Corporate Cup among 48 participants in 2013 before winning the Sony-Expo 2014 Corporate Cup (Fifa World Cup promotional event).
