Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his retirement from international football, bringing a remarkable 23-year career with Portugal to an end.
The 41-year-old forward confirmed his decision on Thursday, saying it was time to hand over the national team's No 7 jersey to the next generation.
Ronaldo retires as Portugal's most-capped player and leading goal scorer, having made 234 appearances and scored 146 goals for his country.
In a video message posted on Instagram, Ronaldo reflected on his long association with the national team.
“I am telling the people of Portugal that the time has come to return the national team's No 7 jersey,” he said.
“I never considered the jersey to be mine alone. However, I have had the privilege of wearing it for 23 years, upholding its honor and taking to the field wearing it in stadiums across different parts of the world.”
He added that the decision had not been easy, describing his international career as a journey that had transformed his life.
“Now it is time to hand the jersey over to the next generation. The decision was not easy. Because some decisions cannot be made with the mind alone; the heart also plays a role,” Ronaldo said.
“The journey that began in August 2003 and changed my life forever is now coming to an end.”
