Spain’s national football federation has postponed all 24 Copa del Rey matches scheduled for Wednesday following a train crash in central Spain that killed at least 30 people.
Authorities said around 80 people were injured in the accident, and the death toll could rise. The crash occurred when a high-speed train slammed into the rear of another train that had stopped on the track.
“Shocked by the tragic train accident,” the federation said in a statement, adding that it had postponed the matches “in solidarity with the victims.”
“The entire Spanish football community stands united in grief over this tragedy and has made itself available to the authorities to assist the victims of this devastating accident,” it added.
The federation said it would announce a revised tournament schedule later.
However, the first-round matches scheduled for Thursday will go ahead as planned. Matches were also played on Tuesday.
The Spanish league has not announced any postponements for this weekend’s fixtures.
