Bangladesh end ASEAN Cup campaign with 9-2 defeat to Indonesia

Bangladesh concluded their inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup campaign with a crushing 9-2 defeat to Indonesia in their final Group A match at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta on Thursday.

Competing as a guest team against higher-ranked opponents after what coach Thomas Dooley described as insufficient preparation, Bangladesh lost all three group matches, having previously suffered 3-0 and 1-0 defeats to Malaysia and Singapore respectively.

Australia-born striker Mitchell Lee Baker scored five goals, while Rizky Ridho, Justin Hubner, Luke Vickery and Kevin Diks netted once each as Indonesia finished top of Group A with seven points.

Shahriar Emon scored Bangladesh's first goal of the tournament before England-based forward Farhaan Ali Wahid opened his international account in stoppage time.

The match proved a tense affair for the hosts, who needed to keep an eye on the simultaneous Malaysia-Singapore fixture to secure their progression to the next round.

Malaysia eventually thrashed Singapore 6-0, leaving Indonesia to advance after finishing level on seven points as well as goal difference with the Malaysians.

Indonesia took the lead in the 11th minute when Baker beat the diving Bangladesh goalkeeper with a precise finish into the far corner. The striker doubled the advantage nine minutes later to put the hosts firmly in control.

Bangladesh suffered another setback in the 27th minute when midfielder Shamit Shome was forced off through injury, with captain Sohel Rana coming on as his replacement.

Rizky Ridho extended Indonesia's lead just after the half-hour mark before Emon pulled one back for Bangladesh in the 36th minute, heading home a cross from Shuki Itofusa.

Baker completed his hat-trick in the 37th minute and added a fourth five minutes later to leave Bangladesh trailing 5-1.

Hubner struck in first-half stoppage time to make it 6-1 at the break, leaving the visitors with a daunting task in the second half.

Bangladesh showed greater resilience after the restart and managed to keep Indonesia at bay for much of the second period before Vickery found the net in the 90th minute.

Farhaan, who made his international debut against Malaysia in Bangladesh's tournament opener, then produced a flying finish to convert Rakib Hossain's cross a minute later, giving the visitors a second goal.

However, Indonesia added two more in the sixth and seventh minutes of stoppage time, with Diks scoring before Baker completed his five-goal haul to seal the emphatic victory.
