Cavan Sullivan has made his United States senior international debut, adding another chapter to a remarkable football story that recently saw his twin brothers represent and win a title with Bangladesh at the U-20 level.
The 16-year-old Philadelphia Union midfielder started for the USA in their 4-1 victory over Peru in Orlando on Saturday, two days before his 17th birthday. His debut made him the fourth-youngest player to appear for the United States senior national team and the youngest in more than two decades, since Freddy Adu in 2006.
Sullivan played 62 minutes and showed the attacking creativity and confidence that have made him one of the most closely watched young players in Major League Soccer. Although he did not score or register an assist, he was involved in several attacking moves and produced an encouraging performance as the USA began a new cycle following the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
“What a pinch-me moment,” Sullivan said after the match. “I’ve been dreaming of this moment since I was so young. This means so much to me and my family, and it’s an extreme honor to represent my country.”
The occasion also offered another international milestone for the Sullivan family, whose connection with Bangladesh football has grown significantly in recent months.
Cavan’s twin brothers, Ronan and Declan Sullivan, represented Bangladesh at the 2026 SAFF U-20 Championship in the Maldives after becoming eligible through their maternal Bangladeshi heritage.
Ronan made an immediate impact, scoring both goals in Bangladesh’s 2-0 victory over Pakistan in the group stage. Bangladesh subsequently reached the final against India, which ended goalless after 90 minutes before Bangladesh prevailed 4-3 on penalties to win the SAFF U-20 title.
Ronan converted Bangladesh’s decisive fifth penalty, while Declan was also part of the championship-winning campaign.
The family’s footballing story has therefore taken an unusual international turn. While Ronan and Declan have already celebrated a regional championship wearing Bangladesh colours, their younger brother has now begun his senior international career with the United States.
Cavan’s rapid rise has been equally notable. He made his professional debut for Philadelphia Union at just 14 and has since established himself as one of the most exciting young players in American football.
His USA debut came as coach Mauricio Pochettino used the post-World Cup friendlies to introduce a new generation of players. For the Sullivan family, however, the moment carried an additional significance: three brothers have now represented two different national teams on the international stage, with Bangladesh playing a particularly memorable role in the family’s football journey.
