Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe has been diagnosed with a hyperextension injury to the posterior capsule of his left knee, the Spanish club said Saturday.
Mbappe suffered the injury during France’s 1-0 Nations League victory over Turkey on Friday, leaving the field shortly after scoring his record-extending 67th international goal.
France coach Zinedine Zidane had earlier said the initial prognosis was “not good.”
Real Madrid confirmed the injury after medical tests on Saturday but did not provide a recovery timeline or specify the treatment planned for the forward.
“After the tests carried out today on our player Kylian Mbappe by Real Madrid’s Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with a hyperextension of the posterior capsule of his left knee,” the club said in a statement.
New France coach Zinedine Zidane said France were "not going to take any risks" and that he would not use Mbappe in the three Nations League matches scheduled over the next 10 days.
France travel to Belgium on Monday before hosting Italy and Belgium at the Stade de France on October 2 and 5.
