Luka Modric marked his return to international action with a stunning solo goal as Croatia defeated the Czech Republic 2-1 in their UEFA Nations League Group A3 opener at Fortuna Arena in Prague on Sunday.
In Group C1, Finland captain Joel Pohjanpalo scored a hat-trick as his side thrashed San Marino 7-0 in Serravalle.
Modric, 41, showed no signs of slowing down as he put Croatia ahead two minutes into the second half. The veteran midfielder picked up the ball on the right, drove forward and unleashed an angled strike from just outside the box into the far corner.
Adam Karabec restored parity for the hosts seven minutes later, but substitute Mario Pasalic scored the winner with 13 minutes remaining to give Croatia a winning start under new head coach Slaven Bilic.
In Serravalle, Pohjanpalo scored three goals as Finland cruised past San Marino, who were reduced to 10 men after captain Alessandro Golinucci was sent off.
The treble put Pohjanpalo at the top of the Nations League scoring charts after the opening round of matches.
Elsewhere in League B Group 1, Switzerland defeated North Macedonia 3-0, with Remo Freuler and Zeki Amdouni, who scored twice, finding the net. Slovenia and Scotland played out a goalless draw in the other group match.
In other League C matches, Albania beat Belarus 2-0, Slovakia defeated Moldova by the same scoreline, while Luxembourg secured a 2-1 away win over Bulgaria.
