Brazil have emerged as a potential opponent for Bangladesh in an October international friendly, with the five-time world champions proposing a match at Dhaka’s National Stadium, according to a Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) source.
The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) has proposed October 5 or 6 for the friendly, with the South American giants reportedly willing to bring a delegation of around 90 members to Dhaka.
The proposal comes after a five-member Brazilian delegation visited Bangladesh on Sunday as part of preparations for the team’s planned India tour.
The delegation travelled directly from the airport to the National Stadium, where they inspected the pitch, dressing rooms, stands and media facilities before also visiting Bashundhara Kings Arena.
They later met BFF president Tabith Awal.
Brazil are scheduled to face India in Kolkata on October 3. The Indian Football Federation had initially withdrawn from the FIFA ASEAN Cup to make room for the high-profile friendly, while Bangladesh were subsequently invited to participate in the tournament.
The proposed Bangladesh fixture, however, remains subject to confirmation.
The FIFA ASEAN Cup is scheduled to begin on September 24 in Indonesia, with the final set for October 3. Bangladesh are expected to play three group-stage matches, and the BFF has yet to give Brazil a final response because of the national team’s busy schedule.
If the match goes ahead, it would be a historic occasion for Bangladesh, as Brazil’s senior national team have never previously played in the country.
Argentina, meanwhile, visited Dhaka in September 2011 for a friendly against Nigeria at the National Stadium, with Lionel Messi featuring for the Albiceleste.
A Brazil-Bangladesh friendly would therefore mark another landmark visit by a global football powerhouse to the Bangladeshi capital and could attract unprecedented attention from local supporters.
