All four men have been ever-present through the test of talent and character that has taken their teams to the last four at this FIFA World Cup 2026 in North America.
They have summoned brilliant goalkeeping displays at the highest level and on the most scrutinised of stages in order to stand one game away from the showpiece match in New York New Jersey.
FIFA shines a light on the respective custodians of France, Spain, England and Argentina as they prepare to go again in Tuesday and Wednesday’s semi-finals.
Mike Maignan – France
Age: 31
Caps: 46
World Cup 2026
Clean sheets: 4
Goals conceded: 2
‘Magic Mike’ has turned the poisoned chalice of replacing the great Hugo Lloris into a cup of plenty by helping Les Bleus to the UEFA EURO 2024 semi-finals against Spain and now this last-four sequel in Dallas.
He has gone three straight knockout matches without conceding, coming off the back of a key penalty save in the Group I-clinching victory over Norway.
The formidable defensive aura of this France side speaks to the leadership, decision-making and organisational ability of the AC Milan goalkeeper who is also renowned for his physicality, athleticism, shot-stopping and distribution.
Stat
Spain may have more clean sheets than France going into their semi-final, yet Maignan has made more saves (11-10) than his Spanish counterpart.
Did you know?
Maignan was born in French Guiana on the northeast coach of South America, but grew up in the northern suburbs of Paris.

“He is physical, quick, he has clean technique. He is very strong. He is one of the best in the world.”
Alisson Becker, Brazil goalkeeper
Unai Simon – Spain
Age: 29
Caps: 64
World Cup 2026
Clean sheets: 5
Goals conceded: 1
Like the rest of this outstanding quartet, Simon has started all six of his country’s fixtures in North America – yet he alone holds the newly minted record of going 650 minutes without conceding a goal in World Cup finals matches.
It took Charles De Ketelaere’s 41st-minute equaliser in Friday’s quarter-final with Belgium to finally stall Simon’s epic run which went all the way back to the group stage at Qatar 2022.
Certainly, this current Spain campaign is contingent on a mean defensive unit underpinned by the Athletic Bilbao glovesman with his strong positioning and anticipation skills.
Simon came to the fore in conjuring big saves in the last-16 win against Portugal, notably throwing himself across goal to deny Cristiano Ronaldo.
Stat
By shutting out Portugal, Simon set a new record of six successive clean sheets in World Cup action, comprising five games at this global extravaganza and Spain’s 2022 tie with Morocco.
Did you know?
2024 was a very good year for the Basque Country native as he not only helped Athletic lift their first trophy in four decades – the Copa del Rey – but also won EURO 2024 with La Roja.
Quote
“Unai Simon and I have been together since 2019 when we won the European [Under-21] Championship, and I’d say it’s almost more a family relationship than a coach-to-player one. It’s an honour and a source of pride to coach him. I’m happy he’s gained worldwide recognition. He’s one of the best goalkeepers in the world.”
Luis de la Fuente, Spain coach
Jordan Pickford – England
Age: 32
Caps: 90
World Cup 2026
Clean sheets: 2
Goals conceded: 6
David Beckham used the word “perfection” to describe Pickford’s Round of 16 performance against the co-hosts in Mexico City after England’s ten men held out for a famous victory.
This was Pickford at this best: not only making the requisite saves – however brilliant – but also having the belief and bravery to take the pressure off his defenders by dealing with crosses and dead-ball situations.
Thomas Tuchel has made a number of defensive changes across the tournament – mid-game ones included – yet the Everton player has been a constant figure with his exemplary focus, decision-making and concentration levels.
Stat
Pickford claimed the record for most England World Cup appearances when helping the Three Lions past Norway on Saturday, pulling clear of goalkeeping predecessor Peter Shilton with his 18th outing at a global finals.
Did you know?
The Atlanta showdown with Argentina will be Pickford’s fifth major international semi-final after the Russia 2018 World Cup, the 2019 UEFA Nations League, EURO 2020 and EURO 2024.
Quote
“I think he’s evolved as a goalkeeper and a person. He’s an excellent shot-stopper. His distribution is second to none. I think he has been under-appreciated for Everton and England when you look at the numbers he’s posting and the number of clean sheets he has.”
Paul Robinson, former England goalkeeper
Emiliano Martinez – Argentina
Age: 33
Caps: 65
World Cup 2026
Clean sheets: 2 World Cup 2026
Goals conceded: 6
Mastery of the goalkeeping arts requires any practitioner to command their penalty area, and there is no more commanding keeper than Argentina’s giant shot-stopper.
A physically forbidding presence at the back of La Albiceleste, Martinez has produced the necessary clutch moments during the defending champions’ roller-coaster ride to the last four. Among the multiple interventions that frustrated Switzerland at the weekend was a superb rush-out save to deny Breel Embolo.
While Lionel Messi repeatedly delivers at one end of the pitch, Argentina can count on Martinez’s fierce determination, mental toughness and utter commitment at the other.
After all, this is the man who braved a newly broken finger to play in club side Aston Villa’s recent UEFA Europa League final win.
Stat
He was awarded the Golden Glove award after his inspirational contribution to Argentina lifting the World Cup Trophy at Qatar 2022.
Did you know?
Martinez has played all his senior career in England after joining Arsenal from Independiente as a teenager and subsequently moving to Aston Villa.

“We have Emiliano Martinez who is a phenomenon. He is a monster of a goalkeeper.”
