Kings secure BFL title, Fakirerpool relegated

Bashundhara Kings clinched the Bangladesh Football League title with a match to spare after beating Abahani Limited 2-0 at the Shaheed Dhirendranath Datta Stadium in Cumilla on Friday.

Brazilian forward Dorielton Gomes and Sohel Rana netted one each in the second half to seal the victory as Kings equal Abahani’s record of six professional league titles.

Fakirerpool Young Men's Club were relegated from the top tier following their 1-0 defeat to PWD on the same day.

Since joining the country’s top-flight football league in 2018, Bashundhara Kings have established themselves as a dominant force in domestic football, previously winning five consecutive league titles.

Their streak was interrupted last season when Mohammedan Sporting Club lifted the championship for the first time. However, Mohammedan had already fallen out of contention earlier this season.

Kings entered the match holding a narrow one-point advantage over Abahani. Although a draw would still have left Abahani in a difficult position, Kings avoided any late-season complications by securing all three points.

The breakthrough came in the 75th minute when Kings forward Faisal Ahmed Fahim was fouled inside the penalty area, leading the referee to award a spot-kick.

Doriellton calmly converted the penalty to put Kings ahead. Just two minutes later, Sohel Rana doubled the lead with a brilliant strike from outside the box.

With 38 points from 17 matches, Bashundhara Kings have regained the league crown.
