Six-time European champions Bayern Munich welcome defending holders Paris Saint-Germain to the UEFA Champions League semi-final second leg on Wednesday night in Munich, with a place in the final hanging in the balance after a pulsating first encounter.
The opening leg at Parc des Princes delivered one of the most thrilling semi-finals in the competition’s history, as Paris edged a nine-goal classic 5-4. The result not only ended their five-match losing streak against Bayern but also handed the German side just their second defeat of the campaign.
With both teams boasting devastating attacking firepower, another goal-fest could be on the cards at the Fußball Arena München. Paris have scored 43 goals in this season’s competition, while Bayern have netted 42 — the first time two clubs have each crossed the 40-goal mark in a single Champions League edition. The all-time record of 45, set by Barcelona in 1999/2000, is now within reach.
Individual brilliance has also been a defining theme. Kylian Mbappé leads the scoring charts with 15 goals, but Harry Kane (13) and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia (10) remain firmly in contention.
Despite trailing by a single goal, Bayern can draw confidence from their head-to-head record, having won nine of the 16 meetings between the sides in this competition. However, with margins so fine, the outcome may ultimately depend on which side handles the pressure better on the night.
Bayern coach Vincent Kompany suggested little tactical deviation from the first leg. “We’re playing at home, we want to win and will do everything to achieve that,” he said, while striker Kane emphasized the importance of taking chances, noting that “it’ll be who takes their moments.”
Defender Jonathan Tah echoed the attacking intent, insisting Bayern would stick to their philosophy despite the stakes. “We want to play attractive and attacking football… we won’t change it,” he said.
Paris boss Luis Enrique, meanwhile, framed the clash as a test against elite opposition. “We admire Bayern, but it’s a motivation to be better,” he said, drawing inspiration from tennis great Rafael Nadal’s battles with top rivals.
Captain Marquinhos expects another high-octane encounter, predicting “a crazy game between two teams that want to win and score,” while midfielder Warren Zaïre-Emery underlined Paris’ commitment to aggressive pressing and attacking football.
