Ranjit Das, one of the finest goalkeepers in the history of Bangladeshi football, has passed away. He breathed his last in the early hours of today (Monday) after suffering a heart attack at a hospital in Sylhet. He was 94.
A shining star of football in the pre-independence era, Ranjit Das regularly guarded the goalposts of the East Pakistan team from 1955 to 1961. He is survived by his wife, one son, four daughters, and a large number of admirers and well-wishers.
His son Rajib Das said: “My father suffered a massive heart attack at around 4:00 am and passed away later in the morning. He was admitted to hospital on January 31 after falling ill and was later shifted to the ICU. Although his condition appeared to have slightly improved on Sunday, he suffered another heart attack late at night. His cremation will be held this evening at the Chalibandar crematorium in Sylhet.”
Renowned for his exceptional skills on the field, Ranjit Das played for Ispahani Club, Azad Sporting Club and Mohammedan Sporting Club before independence. After retiring from active football, he earned widespread respect as a coach. Many footballers emerged under his guidance while he served as coach of the East Pakistan youth team and Azad Sporting Club, playing a significant role in shaping their careers.
While names such as Santu, Mohsin and Aminul are often mentioned as Bangladesh’s finest goalkeepers in the post-independence era, Ranjit Das was unmatched in the period before independence. He was an integral part of the East Pakistan team of his time.
In recognition of his outstanding contribution to football, Ranjit Das was honoured with the National Sports Award. He will remain a cherished and unforgettable figure in the history of Bangladeshi football.
