Cuba Mitchell leaves Bashundhara Kings citing unpaid wages

Midfielder Cuba Mitchell has parted ways with Bashundhara Kings, citing unpaid salary dues, the former Sunderland youth player said in a lengthy statement posted on social media on Saturday.

“I have made the decision to bring my contract with Bashundhara Kings to an end following outstanding salary payments. This was the main reason behind my decision. However, playing under circumstances where persistent issues remained unresolved was both mentally and physically challenging,” Mitchell wrote.

The UK-based midfielder joined the five-time Bangladesh Premier League champions at the end of last July.

Reflecting on his brief stint in Bangladesh, Mitchell said the experience had been meaningful despite its short duration.

“Although my time here was short, it was impactful. From the moment I arrived, I embraced the lifestyle, the culture and the people. I met some genuinely good teammates and supporters who made me feel welcome and reminded me why I love this game,” he said.

Before returning to England, Mitchell also shared his views on the state of Bangladesh football.

“Bangladeshi football deserves better — better structures and fairness for players who sacrifice every day for the game. There is undeniable passion and potential here, and it must be protected.

“I also hope that players who are facing similar situations, especially those suffering in silence due to missed payments or broken commitments, are able to find a voice,” he added.

Mitchell did not specify how many months of salary were outstanding.

Bashundhara Kings have yet to issue an official statement regarding his departure.

Mitchell acquired a Bangladeshi passport shortly after joining the club and earned his maiden international cap against India in November.

His departure comes around six weeks after defender Tariq Kazi also left the club after making similar allegations of unpaid dues.
