SAFF U-20 CHAMPIONSHIP 2024

U-20 boys lose to Nepal, likely to face India in semis

After already securing semi-final spot with a 2-0 win over eliminated Sri Lanka, Bangladesh Under-20 men’s football team conceded a 2-1 defeat against hosts Nepal in the last Group A tie at ANFA complex in Kathmandu Thursday.

Mirajul Islam, who netted the opening goal against Sri Lanka, was not in the starting XI.

The young forward came off the bench to score in consecutive matches, converting a 43rd-minute penalty which he won soon after being introduced in the 32nd minute.

Bangladesh before that had already gone 2-0 down as Samir Tamang’s 17th-minute lead was doubled by Mohsin Ahmed’s own goal in the 18th minute.

The defeat means Bangladesh are likely to face India in the last four.

Defending champions India will conclude Group B fixtures against the Maldives Friday and even a draw would see them advance as group winners.

The Maldives lost to Bhutan, against whom India won the first match.

As Group A runners-up, Bangladesh will face Group B champions in the second semi-final Monday.

It is going to be India or Bhutan.
