Kings, Mohammedan into Independence Cup semis

Bashundhara Kings set up a mouth-watering semi-final with Abahani Limited after edging past Bangladesh Army football team 2-1 in the fourth and last quarter-final of the Independence Cup in the capital’s Kings Arena Tuesday.

The Kings went ahead in the 39th minute through Uzbekistan defender Boburbek Yuldashov before forward Shahriar Emon brought parity right after the hour mark.

The Kings had the last laugh as Brazilian striker Dorielton Gomes struck the winner in the 76th minute.

The top flight champions will now take on traditional powerhouse Abahani in the second semi-final Friday evening at the same venue.

The first semi-final, scheduled to be held in the afternoon on the same day in Gopalganj, will see Rahmatganj Muslim Friends Society take on local giants Mohammedan Sporting Club.

The Black and Whites confirmed their last four berth Tuesday after beating Chittagong Abahani Ltd by a solitary goal in the third quarter-final in Munshiganj.

The last eight clash went into extra time after the normal time ended goalless and Uzbek midfielder Muzaffar Muzaffarov netted the all-important goal in the 97th minute.

In their pursuit of the equalizer, the port city outfit were reduced to 10 men in the 115th minute as Sakib Islam was shown the red card by the referee following two yellow cards.
