2023 INDEPENDENCE CUP

Police beat Jamal to become group winners

Bangladesh Police kept on winning as they edged past Lt. Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club Limited 1-0 in the capital’s Kings Arena Thursday to finish top of their group at the Independence Cup.

Both the Bangladesh Premier League sides earlier secured quarter-final spots after beating Brothers Union in their respective first match of Group A.

Kyrgyzstan midfielder Manas Karipov netted the all-important goal in the 26th minute, curving into the far top corner from the left edge of the box giving the goalkeeper no chance.

Jamal’s Foysal Ahmed Fahim went close to scoring in the fifth minute but former Mohammedan Sporting Club Ltd keeper Ahsan Habib Bipu denied the former Abahani Ltd winger on one-on-one.

Abu Shaeid tried his luck from outside the box in the added time of first half but his weaker foot could not keep it on target and level the margin.

Like the previous match, Sazzad Hossain wanted to make immediate impact after coming off the bench as he too was blocked by Bipu.

Police’s substitute Mathew Bablu also found him on one-on-one with Jamal netminder Mahfuz Hasan Pritom but could not beat him to extend the margin.
