Maradona’s last Argentine club Gimnasia to tour Bangladesh in September

Argentine club Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata, the last club Diego Maradona managed prior to his death, have agreed to play a couple of friendly matches with Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club Limited in Dhaka in September, confirmed a club official Saturday.

The Bangladesh Premier League side earlier received an invitation from a Gimnasia representative to tour Argentina for a friendly but the venue altered after the latest meeting between the two parties held Friday night.

“The league where Gimnasia are competing in now will end in June-July. They agreed to visit Bangladesh. We fixed September to play the two friendlies in Dhaka,” Sheikh Jamal's secretary Md Foyezur Rahman told Dhaka Tribune.

“We also informed them that we want to add two/three players in the current squad. If they agree, we will try to include Argentine players to play the friendlies,” he added.

The club secretary also informed that the two historic matches will be held at Bashundhara Sports Complex in the capital.

Gimnasia, located in La Plata, just outside Buenos Aires, hired Maradona as head coach of the club in September, 2020.

The Argentine great decided to leave the job after just two months, but rejoined two days later to help Gimnasia avoid relegation.

Maradona remained as manager of Gimnasia until his death in November 2020.
