A 98th-minute goal helped Bangladesh beat Singapore 2-1 in their opening AFC U-17 Asian Cup qualifying match at Birshrestha Shaheed Sipahi Mohammad Mustafa Kamal Stadium in Dhaka Wednesday.
Both the Bangladesh goals came from own goal but it was the hosts who dominated from the beginning and created more chances throughout the game.
The home side went ahead within quarter-hour mark as Singapore defender Brayden Goh sent the ball into his own net while trying to clear Nazim Uddin’s cross.
Singapore leveled the margin just before half hour when Muhammad Syazwan’s right-footer from outside the box hit the net through top right corner.
The winning goal arrived in the last minute of added time.
Defender Md Ratul’s long throw-in met a Singapore player who headed back to the goalkeeper Isaac Lee.
The ball slipped from Lee’s hands and bounced inside the net.
Bangladesh U-17 booters line up for team photograph BFF Meanwhile, Yemen thrashed Bhutan 8-0 in the inaugural match of the group at the same venue.
Bangladesh are placed in Group E alongside Yemen, Bhutan and Singapore.
The hosts will face Bhutan on Friday before taking on Yemen on Sunday.
The group winners will qualify for the tournament finals.
A total of 44 countries are participating in the qualifiers split into 10 groups from where 16 best teams will qualify for the finals which will be held in Bahrain in 2023.
