‘At first the club didn’t have faith on us’

Mohammedan Sporting Club has always been a special club when it came to Super Cup and they maintained the height by securing their third consecutive final of the meet yesterday. No one could bet on Mohammedan, who had a fairly poor season and finished fifth in the league, but a convincing 2-0 win over Muktijoddha in the semi-final proved everyone wrong. Mohammedan’s most promising player of the season and the main architect behind their success yesterday, Mobarak Hossain Bhuiya revealed couple of secrets behind their triumph. “We owe the club a lot of money. The club promised to pay all our dues if we reach the final,” was one of the reason stated by the right winger. The non-eligibility of the foreign players made the club doubt the ability in their local recruits to reach the final – the second reason which made the players more determined to prove their club wrong. “At first the club didn’t have faith on us so we tried our best to prove them wrong. We have the unity and determination to do well in the Super Cup,” said Mobarak who scored a goal and setup the other in Mohammedan’s win yesterday. Mohammedan coach Saiful Bari Titu hailed his charges and believed the first goal made all the difference in the game. “I rested five players because they were tired for the fixture. Muktijoddha were more mature, but they were also tired. It was an evenly contested game, but the first goal was the turning point. And Mobarak’s second goal only guided us to the safe zone.” Titu also spoke about their final opponent Sheikh Russell. “They won the treble and they are definitely the best team in the tournament with most of the national players. I know their ability. I will work on our players’ fitness and only then we can do something.” Meanwhile, Muktijoddha coach Shafiqul Islam Manik blamed his misfiring forwards for the defeat and held Kanchan responsible for the opening goal. He also said it would have been a “surprise” if they reached the final. “We didn’t utilise the chances we had in the opening stage. Strikers failed to score, but the turning point was conceding the first goal. It was all Kanchan’s fault. He was at the wrong place and showed lack of responsibility.” However, Manik stated Mobarak as a “talented” player and said it was his excellent goal that dented their hopes.
