Abahani Ltd, Dhaka staged a spirited comeback to hold hosts Three Star Club Nepal to 1-1 draw in the second match of the AFC President’s Cup group ‘A’ qualifiers at the Dasrath Stadium Kathmandu yesterday. Earlier the first match of the group between Erchim FC of Mongolia and Taiwan Power Company ended 0-0. Winger Towhidul Alam’s 39th minute strike kept Abahani afloat after star Nepalese forward Jagjit Shreshta put the hosts ahead in the 16th minute. Custodian Shahidul Alam Sohel was the hero of the day for the traditional sky-blue outfit as he saved a penalty and was in an outstanding form. Three Star started at a lively pace, with African forward Leonce Dodoz and Jagjit forming a dangerous combination upfront. However, Abahanni kept their cool and looked to counter-attack and successfully salvaged a draw. Jagjit curved a free kick past Sohel in the 16th minute, after he was fouled by Abahani’s Ghanaian playmaker, Awudu Ibrahim just outside the box. In the 31st minute Towhidul Alam warmed up for his strike with a nice effort that saw his fierce shot punched to safety by Three Star goalie Kirion Chemjong. Eight minutes laters, Towhid was not to be denied. Anticipating a cross from the right side, Towhid took his position in the middle of the box as the ball came to him off a deflection from defender Sandip Rai Towhid, and tapped it home. Sohel dived to his left to deny Jagjit from the spot in the 70th minute. Abahani play Taiwan Power Company next on Thursday.
