Sabina Khatun, the Bashundhara Kings captain, has set a new scoring record in the Women’s Football League by netting as many as 30 goals with an average of almost three goals per match.
The number is the most ever scored during a single edition of the competition.
Previous record was held by then Abahani Limited forward Aung Mra Ching Marma, who scored 29 goals in the 2013 edition.
Sabina struck five goals during her side’s 13-1 win over Jamalpur Kacharipara Xl Sunday afternoon to reach the mark.
In consequence, the Kings also secured the title on debut quite dominatingly with a game in hand.
“I tried to carry on my consistency of the past,” said Sabina, who was also the top scorer in the competition’s first edition in 2011 where she had 25 goals representing champion Lt. Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club Limited at the age of only 18.

She also told the reporters, “I tried to contribute goals for my teammates besides scoring for myself. I think we are the only team who have many scorers.”
Sabina’s words are supported by statistics.
There are seven clubs in the league and five of them have not yet reached the 30-goal mark as a team.
Meanwhile, Kings forwards Srimoti Krishna Rani Sarkar and Tahura Khatun netted 19 and 14 goals respectively to sit behind their captain as the top scorers.
National team’s long-time captain is currently the most senior and experienced footballer who has played all three editions of the league.
The Bangladesh skipper has her own views to improve the Women’s Football League.
She said, “If there is a pool system of including foreign players then I think it would be more competitive.”
