Shafiqul Islam Manik may seem like a low-profile candidate for the president’s post of the Bangladesh Football Federation Election 2020, but the former footballer and coach is determined to see the end of the race with the aim of bringing change in football.
A total of 49 candidates for 21 posts have submitted their nomination forms Tuesday, according to a BFF official.
Among those candidates, three including three-time president Kazi Salahuddin and vice-president Badal Roy will run for the most prestigious post.
Manik, who worked as the head coach of Lt. Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club Limited last season, spoke to the media after submitting his paper.
He said, “I had this in my mind to work for football. Federation is the best place to work that is why I took the decision.
“I’m not only a coach but also an organizer. I contested for DUCSU (Dhaka University Central Student Union) election successfully. It’s been four decades in football, 15 years as player and 25 years as coach. I can utilize this experience. I’m still low-profile candidate but when they (voters) see my profile their mind may change.”
Some 139 councilors will cast votes to choose the next president.
Salahuddin, also the regional football federation (Saff) chief, is still far ahead in the race on papers backed by a strong and experienced panel that strolled to victory in the last three polls.
The three-time VP Badal, who used to be Salahuddin’s deputy, also have vast experience in football election.
“I think two other contestants for the president’s post have failed in last 12 years,” said Manik.
“There was more talk than development. We are not where we supposed to be. If you don’t sit in the chair you can’t work no matter how much you talk.
“Most councilors I talked to previously wanted change. If they want the change honestly I have an opportunity. I’m here for the development of football.”
The election is scheduled to be held on October 3.
Candidates may withdraw their names by September 13.
Manik dismissed any chance to withdraw, saying “I still lag behind in the race but I’m the coach who doesn’t quit until the end. I’ll fight till the end.”
