The Bangabandhu and Bangamata U-17 Gold Cup Football Tournament (boys and girls) got underway Sunday at Tangail Stadium.
Kakua union beat Chilimpur union 1-0 in the opening match of the boys’ tournament while Tangail sadar defeated Nagorpur upazila 5-0 in the first game of the girls’ event.
Prior to the opening matches, a colorful ceremony was held comprising musical and dance programs where State Minister for Youth and Sports, Zahid Ahsan Russel was the chief guest.

In his speech, Russel said sports complex and gymnasium-cum-indoor stadium will be built in each district.
Russel also said all the athletes and players of Bangladesh will be paid a monthly stipend to support their families.
He added that the ministry is trying to send the talented players to Brazil and Argentina for specialized training.
