Mohammedan crash out

Mohammedan Sporting Club Limited crashed out of the tournament’s opening round once again, following the Federation Cup, after being held to a goalless draw against Chittagong Abahani Limited in Sunday's second game of the Walton Independence Cup 2018-19 season at Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka, which was the last match of the group phase.

Chittagong Abahani finished at the top of Group B with seven points while Rahmatganj Muslim Friends Society earned four points to secure second place in the group.

Mohammedan and Nofel Sporting Club saw the exit door with three and one point respectively.

Mohammedan kicked off the day’s second match with an equation to beat the Chittagong outfit by a margin of four goals or more, but the Black and Whites lacked creativity and the finishing touch, and failed to get a single goal.

Landing Darboe’s appearance earned the Gambian forward a close-range header, following Amir Hakim’s cross, but keeper Rasel Mahmud Liton was ready to grip the ball.

Chittagong Abahani almost broke the deadlock in the 49th minute, but Mohammedan goalkeeper Khandakar Saad Istiyak produced a diving punch to deny Nigerian defender Mufta Lawal’s header from a Nazmul Islam Rasel free-kick.
