Krishna Rani Sarkar netted a brace as the Bangladesh women’s football team registered their first victory in the 12th South Asian Games beating Sri Lanka 2-1 in their second match in Shillong, India yesterday.
After the first half ended goalless, forward Krishna put Bangladesh ahead in the 62nd minute before Sri Lanka equalised the margin just four minutes later. Krishna scored again in the 85th minute to seal the victory. Bangladesh lost their opening game against Nepal 1-0. Nepal also won their yesterday’s game against Maldives 1-0.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh won nine medals in the third day of the Games, including two gold, two silver and five bronze medals in Shillong and Guwahati yesterday.
Apart from Bangladesh’s first gold winner Mabia Akhter Simanta in weightlifting and Mahfuza Khatun’s unexpected triumph in swimming, two more silver medals were won in weightlifting, three bronze in wrestling and two more in swimming.
Bangladesh weightlifter Fullapati Chakma won Bangladesh’s second silver in the women’s 58kg category, lifting a total of 144kg. She also won bronze in the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship in Malaysia six years ago. The third silver was also won from the same discipline when Sathy Sultana became second in the women’s 69kg category. Overall, she lifted 169kg.
Swimmer Mahfizur Rahman Sagar bagged two more bronze yesterday in the men’s 50m freestyle event where he clocked 23.95s and in the men’s 1500m freestyle where he timed 17:11.95m. Earlier, Sagar won bronze in the men’s 200m freestyle last Saturday. Meanwhile, Bangladesh sit fourth in the points table with one gold, three silver and 13 bronze medals.
